Merry Christmas from the Elfin' Thompsons

Click the picture to watch our Elfin' video.
NOTE: The video no longer works. OfficeMax has taken down the Elf Site.

I know Elf Yourself is a couple years old, and I know everyone and their brother is doing it... but it makes us laugh every time we watch it. Something about Dell's head on the female body just gets my giggle going. Merry Christmas!

Lyon's Crabby Christmas

Shelly & Chad hosted the family for a great evening of crab, kids, and a sighting of Santa! Chris, Liz, Sammia and Isabella came down from Chico. Grandmama Meena and Papa Ray were surrounded by all their kids and grandkids. We shared special Christmas memories around the table, and made a new one in the process. View the photos on Flickr.

Holy Crap - It's December

How did it get to be December? What happened? I feel kinda like this Santa, needing a stiff dirty martini and a change of pants. I can totally relate to screaming Dougal-Baby Scott and dumbfounded Little Dell (photo circa 1967). "Wha Happan?"

It's only 21 days till Christmas, and I am so not ready for it. Trying to get in the spirit, but it is slow coming. Maybe soon, hopefully soon... Nora is really helping, with her advent calendar excitement, and her pink twinkle lights in her room (not white or multicolored - they had to be pink). I bet after this weekend, it will really kick in. Crossing my fingers.

Thanksgiving in Lakeport

Nicki and Andy hosted a lovely Thanksgiving this year. It was a smaller group, but it was still full of love and thankfulness. We missed those who weren't with us this year. Love to everyone! View the photos on Flickr.

Happy Halloween from the Corpse Bride!

HOPSCOTCH!
(if you haven't seen the movie, you won't get it)

Like mother (2005), like daughter (2007). Nora found my Corpse Bride costume in the "Boo Box" and wanted to wear it. So we stitched some elastic to hold it up around the neck. We fashioned a bone arm out of an old pair of tights and an undershirt. The remaining part of the tights went to the bone leg. The rest was straight from my version of the costume. A little blue skin makeup and some attitude... and there you have it! View a few more photos on Flickr.

Do the Gratitude Dance

This is the gratitude dance. Be grateful and have some fun.
Every morning when you wake up, follow this three step process:
1. Think of what you're grateful for at that moment,
2. Watch the Video, and...

Undokai Ball Race

Nora's JBBP had a huge "sports day" festival called Undokai, and I took the day off to attend and volunteer. The teachers said "if you are going to go to only one of your child's Japanese celebrations this year, this is the one to go to... it truly is a spectacle." I couldn't agree more! Here is a video of Nora and Ketarie at Undokai doing the ball rolling race - it was great fun for the kindergarteners. The music was actually playing in the background over the loudspeaker, and it was strangely like a Japanese cartoon or a video game or something! View more photos on Flickr.

UNDOKAI: This electrifying annual event is held in schools throughout Japan—elementary through high school. The Undokai event stems from Taiku no hi (Health and Sports Day), an official nationally recognized holiday in Japan that commemorates the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo. Undokai combines the Japanese word undo, meaning exercise, and kai, gathering. Throughout Japan, schools, cities, and other organizations promote unity, team work and friendship through the Undokai. In this same spirit, the Japanese school divides into teams and holds a series of competitions such as bean toss (bean bags into a basket high up on a bamboo pole), races and team relays, dancing displays, obstacle course, and the classic tug-of-war.

It made me laugh, it made me cry...

These two videos have been floating around and I have had about 10 people tell me to watch them... So, I finally did, and I had to share them with you. Enjoy!

Nora is Trying Karate

Nora is trying out karate and seems to be liking it. She doesn't have her white uniform yet (it's called a Gi), so she is in her purple t-shirt in the video. I also get a huge crackup out of the boy to Nora's right with the blond hair and yellow belt.

Back to School Night

Ms. Tsukamoto and Tanaka Sensei were both very gracious last night in spending time with all the parents at Rosa Parks JBBP for Back to School Night. Nora is doing well in kindergarten, and already knows lots of words and songs, and some hiragana characters.

Nora's drawing is the one in the bottom left corner, with the long dangly earrings. Just click the photo to enlarge and see her rendition of her name in Japanese. Yes, she can already write her name in Japanese too! After just about one month in school. It looks like this:

One website translated it as "The kanji used to write your name mean: Ability, Fine Silk. Meaning: You are a beautiful princess clothed in fine silk who abounds with great ability and achieves whatever she sets her mind to." Hmmmm... sounds like my Nora to me!

Happy Birtday Papa Ray!

Nora, Sarah, Dell & Otto say Happy Birthday to the best dad in the world! Ray, hope your day is as special as you are... we love you tons. See you soon!

Sunday, September 16, 2007

Shhh... Happy Birthday Nora!

Don't spoil the covert operation... Nora doesn't know it is her birthday today. We are celebrating a month late (on October 13th), due mostly to the Salesforce.com Dreamforce conference that Dell attends each year, but no worries, she doesn't know the difference... she still doesn't have the months/days thing down yet. I bet we wouldn't be able to pull the wool over her eyes if this was her sixth birthday!

We have had a nice mellow hang-around-the-house day. We have been organizing closets, doing laundry, and kitchen cleaning. The birthday girl watched a few episodes pf Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Wow Wow Wubzzy, and some Power Puff Girls.

The high point was watching an old Star Trek together... the impetus for the vintage tee in the photo. That tee was Dell's when he was a little kid, and Mama T passed it on to us. Nora still isn't quite big enough for it, but she's getting close!

When we dropped Dell off at Dreamforce this afternoon, Nora fell asleep in the back of the car with a My Little Pony coloring book on her lap. She is having a great birthday, even though she doesn't know it is a special day. But when you are five, every day is a special day, right?

Aki Matsuri in Japantown

Aki Matsuri

Dell, Justin, Nora and I went down to Japantown in SF and had a little celebration... We met Bobbi and Sam and had a great fun meal at Benihana. Then we went out to the Peace Plaza and watched the dancing (Sarah & Nora joined in!).

Nora's Preschool Graduation

The Graduates
Today was Nora's graduation from Children's Village preschool. It was a bittersweet day, as Nora has been at the daycare/preschool since she was only 18 months old (most weekdays for the last 3-1/2 years!). I was up and down all day - fine, then teary, excited then melancholy.

There was a lovely ceremony where the kids sang a few songs - one in English (a jazz number called Little Red Rooster - LISTEN NOW, with scatting included!) and two in Spanish (El Coqui - LISTEN NOW | Samba Le - LISTEN NOW).

For each graduate, the school director Molly read "What I Learned in Preschool". It was at the same time very touching ("I learned to help my friend up when he falls down hard") and scathingly funny ("I learned to tell my friends not to pick their boogers because they have germs").

Thank you to all the amazing teachers and staff at CV that have show love, caring, patience, education, and fun over the years. We will miss all of them deeply.

Cool Swapping Sites: Zwaggle, Swaptree

From Cool Mom Picks:

Zwaggle is a brand new site especially for momstuff-swapping. It's a very cool cash-free world where you can donate your old exersaucers and strollers in exchange for the stuff you'd rather have today. While there's not an enormous selection just yet, we hear the landfills are giving Zwaggle two thumbs up.

Another resource is Swaptree which helps you trade books, cds, dvds and games for ones you'd rather have. You just list what you've got, list what you want instead, and they'll do the matchmaking for you. The cost? Nada. Only the hit your ego takes when you admit publicly that you have the entire Danielle Steele library in hardcover.

Now go get rid of some stuff. You know you need to make room for Harry Potter VII.

I am looking forward to uncluttering some of our household stuff, and this looks like a perfect venue to do it.

In Memoriam ~ Jeffrey James Breiholz (1964-2007)

My best friend Melinda's husband Jeff Breiholz unexpectedly died in his sleep last night; he was only 43 years old.
Goodbye Jeff - You Will Be Missed

He leaves behind his wife Melinda, their two beautiful daughters, Claire and Camille, his parents, Buck Breiholz and Anne James, his brother Brad, uncles, aunts and cousins, as well as many close friends. Please send your healing prayers and love to Melinda, Claire and Camille, and everyone else experiencing the sadness of this loss. Jeff, you will be missed by many.

Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still.
For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent.
In this divine glass they see face to face; and their converse is free, as well as pure.
This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die,
yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.
- William Penn, from More Fruits of Solitude

Welcome Baby Isabella!

Great news... My brother Chris's wife Liz gave birth to their daughter Isabella Ray this morning! 6 pounds 5 ounces, and 19 inches long (very healthy for being two weeks early!). I only got to have a quick phone chat with him, so I don't know the details, but Chris says Liz and the baby are doing great. I am sure big sister Sammia is very excited to have a new sibling. Congrats to the Cox family! View the PHOTOS on Flickr.

Quincy @ One Month Old

Quincy-

I got to babysit for Grant and Quincy (and Nora too). I can't tell you how amazingly perfect Nora and Grant were. Truly. I got to pay full attention to Quincy - giving her a bottle, changing a poopy diaper, singing her a song, cuddling her up. I got a nice "infant fix".

The two preschoolers kept themselves busy with pretend play (saving the princess - Nora, of course - from a dragon), and lots of building blocks (they pretended they were bugs and they were roasting them up to eat them). There wasn't any hitting, pinching or hair-pulling! I think those two are turning a big corner in Cousin-hood.

Teresa's Tubular Tablecloth

Teresa made this super fabulorific, amazingly spectabulous tablecloth for Nora this weekend. More importantly, she made the table under it! You have admired the lovely handmade piece of furniture in Nora's room, no?

We went over to Oakland, met Teresa at her house, headed over to "The Taj Mahal of Fabric Stores" - Poppy Fabric - and picked out the oilcloth fabric and dingleballs.

We spent the afternoon hanging at the Hardy's, and Teresa pretty much just threw this together for Nora.

We have already had one dinner picnic on it, and it works perfectly. Better, it cleans up in a snap, and looks divine.

Thanks Tess for your amazing handy work!

Happy Birthday Lotus!

Click to enlargeClick to enlarge Miss Lotus (a former coworker at Mortar) had a little get together at Mars bar, and Nora and I stopped by...

It was a "rockstar" party, so Nora wore her "My mom is a rockstar" tee, but we pinned a Nora-hand-written note over the top replacing mom with Lotus, because Lotus truly IS a rockstar.

Nora didn't last too long, as it was pretty loud, and I gave her a Shirley Temple before giving her food. I should know by now... but I got her out of there pre-meltdown.

Unfortunately, I didn't avoid the meltdown -- it DID happen, once Nora realized we weren't going back to the party.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Lotus! We had fun at your party (while Nora lasted).

Just Say YES!

I found myself laughing out loud to this article, "Just Say Yes" written By Sandra Tsing Loh (on the Wondertime website). It begins:

I'm not going to sugarcoat this, and anyway, I don't know the politically correct wording. The fact is, I have an impossible 4-year-old.
I can totally relate to her plight (too strong a word?), and think I will have to try her technique on Nora sometime soon!

SF Giants Game with Mortar

Charlotte, Georgia, Bea & Lou SealWOW - A truly awesome experience tonight. Mortar treated for a night at the ballpark in the bullpen seats. They are just to the right of the visitor dugout, basically IN the visitor bullpen area. Catered food and beer/wine, a really nice usher named JT, and lots of perks like Lou Seal coming down to visit.

A few kids from the Mortar family got to join us, including Charlotte, Georgia, Bea, (Mark's girls), Jack (Todd's son), and of course, Nora. And there was a whole contingent from Isilon, including some of their kids too. It was the familiar story of advertising agency + clustered storage leader + kiddos hopped-up on cotton candy w/ foam fingers + winning Giants baseball... a combo for a perfect night.

One of the Houston Astros bullpen catchers leaned over and gave Nora a baseball. Nora got filmed by the TV crew and even got on the Jumbotron! I missed the shot of her on screen, but my coworker Todd says he was Tivo-ing it (in HD even!) so hopefully the she got onto TV too! We also got to chat with (and get an autograph from) ice skating Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi who was a "Ball Dudette" for the evening.

We were truly spoiled, and sitting in any other seats will feel so mundane! A huge THANKS SO MUCH to Mortar for the extra-special treat. View the photo set on Flickr.

Mother's Day 2007

What a special day it was - especially for new Mama Shelly! Not even a week before, she got the best present a mother could hope for... a healthy child.

Joan, Shelly and I (and Quincy) went to a great brunch at Palomino. Dell and Nora stopped by after playing at the park on Embarcadero near AT&T Park. We got hugs and kisses from them both.

Dinner with The Coovert Family

Nice and full from a fun dinner at Buca di Beppo with Kierstin Coovert and her kids Harry, Sophia, William (don't forget "Mr. Bonus Baby" in her tummy!). This restaurant totally wins the award for "Best Place to Play 'I Spy' with the Kiddos." The young foursome were semi-wild, but good enough to warrant ice cream sundae desserts all around. Plus, the volume of that place is so loud, that it doesn't really matter. Nora flirted with Harry. Sophia and Nora held hands while walking back to the parking garage. I loved seeing Dell wrangling two kids per hand crossing the street - he did a great job! View the photos on Flickr.

Quincy Joan Suzanne Lyon

Baby Quincy is here! She is absolutely perfect, and Shelly, Chad and Grant are all doing well. I am sure you want to know the timeline and details, so here is the scoop on how it went down...

Shelly and Chad checked into CPMC around 8pm Mon 5/7, while Meena (Grandmama Joan) & Papa Ray stayed with Grant at his house. They started to induce Shelly around 9:45pm, and contractions started in earnest around midnight. The epidural was given (yeah!) around 2am Tue 5/8. Shelly called me at 5am to say I should get there before 7am, so I showered up and headed over to CPMC. I got there around 6:30am, and it was perfect timing, because about 6:45am, Shelly's water broke. Then it all happened like gangbusters! She dilated from 6cm to 10cm in only 20 minutes (thank God for the epidural!). Shelly started pushing just before 8am, and after a mere 35 minutes of pushing, Quincy Joan Suzanne Lyon entered the world at 8:28am. WOW!

Just like when I was there for Grant's birth, I am totally humbled and awed by my sister and the miracle of birth. Shelly is such a strong person, a wonderful mother, and I am so ecstatic for the birth of her daughter Quincy. I am getting all teary-eyed just writing this! Anywhoo, CONGRATS Lyon Family, and welcome Quincy -- you are soooo loved!

Fountains of Wayne

Just got back from an awesome show at Great American Music Hall... the "Fountains of Wayne" concert. Nice to have some grownup time after all that crazy kiddo time at Disney.

Lead singer Chris Collingwood had a toothache, but still rocked the house, and gave a great performance. I love the bass player Adam Schlesinger. He really made the show for me.

If you haven't heard FOW, check them out: funny lyrics, great tunes, just good all around music for grown-ups who don't want to feel too grown-up.

Disneyland: Video of Nora Giving It UP!

Here is a video of Nora throwing a crying fit in line for the Astro Orbiter ride. I am not embedding it here, because Nora was embarrassed about the video, so you have to pop over to YouTube to view it.

Disneyland: Day Three

Well, we made it to the last day... just barely. A little too much grown-up fun at dinner (read: wine/cocktails) made for a rough morning for Mommy. Luckily Nora and I slept in while Dell took Uncle Scott to the airport bright and early. Once Daddy got back, he lovingly took Nora down to breakfast then out to the pool for some swimming. Thanks Dell!

A late afternoon start at the California Adventure park was a perfect way to end the trip. First thing we did was the Aladdin stage show musical, which was AMAZING. Flying carpets, singing, dancing, a hilarious genie. It was Broadway quality, I tell ya! Then we did some kiddo rides in the Bugs Life area (Nora was scared to go on most of them, but once they were over with, she liked them fine). After the Electric Light Parade, the park closed, and we headed over to the Magic Kingdom.

No rides this time, just some shopping for trinkets, and a quick pull to try to get the Sword out of the Stone before hopping the tram back to the Embassy Suites for the final time. Bye Disney... Hope it isn't too long before we return. View the 34 photos on Flickr.

Disneyland: Day Two

Another day at the Magic Kingdom. Lots of fun rides, waiting in not-too-long lines, cotton candy, corndogs, slurpees, the works. The highlight of the day was when we rode Autotopia. Nora was pitching a fit in line about not wanting to go, and of course, when we were done with the ride, she said "can we do it again?" The nice young man working the ride said we could go again without waiting in the line again, and then another guy said "Would she like to ride with a character?" We all said "Sure!" So, into the car climbed Pluto, and he drove Nora around the track! A once in a lifetime experience, I am sure!

Dell went and picked up Uncle Scott who was in California for some job interview, while Nora and I stayed at the park. Nora bravely did "The Haunted Mansion" with me! We also rode the "Pirates of the Caribbean" and the "Winnie the Pooh" ride.

We met up with Dell and Scott at the Disneyland Hotel in "Goofy's Kitchen" for a character dinner. The buffet was terrible (except for the delicious blackberry balsamic vinagrette for the salad!), the desserts were awesome, and the entertainment was priceless. There are lots of photos of Nora with Disney characters in this set of 86 photos on Flickr.

Disneyland: Day One

We had a great first day at Disneyland! Nora woke us up like it was Christmas morning, all excited and raring to go. Dell and I were a bit slow getting going after the long drive down last night (we finally got to bed after midnight). We hit the park and spent the day enjoying the magic of The Magic Kingdom. It was extremely special for me to be there with my daughter. I kept getting choked up all day! Dell had to head back to the room around 3pm, but Nora was a real trooper, and she and I lasted until after 5pm. Nora decided she doesn't like the "dark, inside rides, except Pirates of the Caribbean, but that is just a little bit scary." We are kicking back in the room tonight, having some room service and watching videos (Disney flicks, of course!) View the 33 photos on Flickr.

Chris Jordan: Cool Art

Ran across this today and wanted to share. Very cool art by Chris Jordan that, in the words of Anna Hecker from Threeminds, "makes a statement about American consumption and spending that’s a little more than just 'cool' and 'fun'. The way the pieces look has been considered as carefully as the messages they portray, and the artist allows the numbers to speak for themselves rather than flinging preachy messages at the viewer. It’s a simple, clever way to convey a lot of difficult information with an image and just a few words."

Click for Chris Jordan's Artwork

This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs.

Oh What a Night! Jersey Boys

Wow! I was blown away by the Jersey Boys show last night. Truly amazing...

The cast is dynamite;
I even swooned a tad bit over Christopher Kale Jones who plays the lead role of Frankie Valli. The story keeps you charged-up the entire time (one little sad point in Act 2, but even that was very moving). Great songs throughout. I didn't know that "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)" was a Four Seasons song!

If you have even an inkling of going to see a great musical, you don't want to miss this one.
